Mangrove Transplantation & COASTAL Rehabilitation Dhahban Mangrove Nursery

Huta's purpose built Nursery in Dhahban has an initial capacity of 1,000,000 plants. The saplings are maintained for 6 to 8 months in the nursery under simulated conditions and as such they develop a well established root system that provides them with high survival rates when compared to the direct dibbling of seeds/propagules.

Step 1 - Seeds Harvesting

All of our plants are sourced from seeds that are sustainably harvested from Huta's established Mangrove plantations along the shoreline of Saudi Arabia.

A thorough visual inspection of the seeds condition is undertaken by our agronomists prior to the harvesting process

Step 2 - Seeds Storing

Seeds are inspected to establish maturity, health condition and ensure that they are free from infestation and/or physical injury. Seeds are collected and temporary stored in temperature controlled environment until the germination process commences.

Step 3 – Potting

Upon germination, the seedlings are potted into plastic bags and placed in Huta's modern greenhouse designed to protect them from harsh weather while allowing access to light and ventilation. Here the newly planted seeds are watered twice daily until the commencement of the hardening period.

Step 4 – Watering 4 month old Mangrove seedlings

Drip lines and soaker hoses are used to maintain the moisture within the nursery. For hardening the seedlings; brackish seawater is introduced in the watering regime in order to ease their acclimatisation to the harsh field environment.

Step 5 – Watering 5 month old Mangrove seedlings

Fresh water utilisation is gradually being reduced and seawater is introduced slowly. Salinity concentrations is set to be 25ppt at this stage and is incrementally being increased.

Step 6 – Hardening 7 month old Mangrove seedlings

Upon hardening, the seedlings are graded according to their height and maturity and are reared further until being transported to the outplanting field.

Step 7– Planting Field Hardening

The seedlings are then transported to the outplanting fields for further hardening prior to transplantation

Step 8 – Site Preparation

Huta's team of experienced workforce preparing the potting holes to receive the Transplants

Areas where native Mangrove stands, wildings & propagules are present suggest a well established substrate and are offering prime planting conditions.

Step 9 - Transplanting of Avicennia Marina

The seedlings are planted in holes of the same size or slightly larger than their root balls and only deep enough so that the top of the root ball is flush or only slightly below ground.

Transplanted Area Overview

Precautions are taken to ensure that the top of the root ball does not protrude above, nor is more than 2 inches below normal ground, as the seedlings may rot.

Transplanting of Avicennia Marina

The planting holes are then tightly sealed around the plant so as to prevent the plant from wobbling and to close air pockets around the roots.
